Firefox 3.0 Beta is Almost Here Stumble It del.icio.us

Firefox 3 isn’t supposed to be officially released for a few more days, but the download links
have been unearthed and promoted on Digg, so we took the opportunity to
test it out. There are Windows, Mac and Linux versions available for
download.

Once my download was complete, I did notice that all of my browser
add-ons were gone, and my previous toolbar settings had been reverted
to the default settings. This doesn’t seem to be the case for all
users, but it’s been the case with me. Thankfully, the settings can be
easily imported.

The major changes I noticed with Firefox 3 are the improved
management tools for keeping track of the websites you frequent or
would like to have access to. The most obvious of these particular
changes can bee seen on the URL bar. A little star makes for easy
bookmarking. It’s reminiscent of an IE bookmarking icon, but operates
more like the “starring” function in your Gmail account.

Click it once, and your current page is marked. Click it twice, and
a tiny window pops up for editing the current bookmark. Choose which
bookmark folder you’d like to add it to, name it and tag it. Every time
you pull up that page, the star will be highlighted so you know you’re
on a bookmarked page. If you click the highlighted star, you now have
the option of deleting it from your bookmarked list.

These actions are saved in real time in a new toolbar section called
Places. This grants you easy and organized access to your bookmarked
and tagged sites. A few filters let you check out most recently starred
and tagged pages, recently visited starred and tagged pages, and most
starred and tagged pages. Each of these will show about 6 results, and
there’s also an option for opening all of the results in their own
respective tabs.

If you’re anything like me, then you’ll appreciate these easy access
tools for helping you stay organized with your browsing activity. I
have a certain method to my tabbed madness when it comes to blogging,
so having the ability to open all of my necessary, bookmarked tabs at
once (and in order) saves me a lot of time. Other tweaks you’ll notice
are an improved plug-in manager, a revised downloads manager, and an
upgraded security system for alerting you to suspected attacks.
